The Food

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

Hippocrates, circa 450-350BC

By embracing Permaculture in our farming, we produce nutritious, chemical-free food while healing simultaneously both the land and the young people who spend time here.

Our philosophy lends to a quality of food that is second to none.

Our livestock not only grazes on the lush pastures but their diet is supplemented with minerals and trace elements.

Across the farm we produce a range of food from our fruit and nut tree orchard to the livestock (beef cattle, goats, free range chickens, turkeys, and ducks) to the newly developed vegetable garden.

All of our produce is available for purchase. Please see below for what is available. Feel free to get in contact to hear what vegetables are available and in season!

Breed

The Boer Goat originated in South Africa in the early 1900’s when some farmers began selecting their goats for meat qualities. It is the only goat breed that has been specifically bred for meat and is recognized as the World’s premier meat goat.

We selected Boer goats for a few key reasons: it’s meat and hide quality, its fertility and kidding percentage and its excellent grazing habits. Goat meat is low in saturated fat and cholesterol. And, if you ever come to visit the farm you will see how wonderful the goats are,the kids are guaranteed to put a smile on any young person’s face!

Nutrition

Nutrition is the most important requirement when you’re producing meat goats. Goats have a selective grazing habit which enables them to eat a wider range of plants than either sheep or cattle. Our lush paddocks provide plenty of nutrition for the herd.

Cattle

The beef cattle foundation herd are Murray Grey Cattle (Australian breed) and we are experimenting with crossing them with Aberdeen Angus and also Saler cattle. We raise them as grass fed cattle in our lush paddocks using Pat Colby’s animal management system too, without chemical intervention.

Some of the reasons we selected the Murray Greys are:
– renowned for their ease of calving.
– temperament; Murray Greys are quiet, easily handled cattle, which is of course great for our youth
– market acceptance- they are readily accepted by all areas of the market and carry a sound and well deserved reputation as producers of quality beef.
– dressing and yield; abattoirs, butchers and carcase competition results all point towards Murray Greys having exceptional dressing percentages and even more remarkable yields of sale-able beef.
– meat quality; Murray Greys are proven for marbling and tenderness where they are leaders in producing high quality beef.

All birds are free-range to scratch, perch and live how nature intended. Their diet is supplemented with wholly organic feed.

Interestingly we are very fortunate to have twin Maremma Sheepdog boys to protect our feathered friends in their enclosure. A livestock protection breed of Italian origin, the Maremma sheepdog has a solid, muscular build and a thick white coat, which forms a thicker collar around the neck. Despite its huge size, the Maremma sheepdog is very friendly towards animals and particularly gentle with our youth when under supervision. They love their role on the farm and are very calm and intelligent.
